Approaching Perfection

Everest’s Myspace describes them as: “Often descriptions of bands fall into the equation of “this well known group plus this other established act plus a few adjectives.” But some bands defy this shorthand, offering something so pure & true that its roots aren't apparent. Everest is this sort, taking us down to foundational rock truths with an easy glide and expansive vision. While one can draw some clues from the folks they’ve toured with – Neil Young, Wilco, My Morning Jacket – ultimately Everest is simply a great rock ‘n’ roll band in the classic, open-minded mold.”
Everest formed in Los Angeles in 2007, comprised of Russell Pollard (vocals, guitar, drums, lyricist), Jason Soda (guitar, keys, vocals), Joel Graves (guitar, keys, vocals), Elijah Thomson (bass, vocals) and Davey Latter (drums, percussion). In 2008 they released their debut, “Ghost Notes”, which was only recorded over two weeks. The album gained them some critical acclaim.
Now they are releasing their follow up and highly anticipated, “On Approach” (arriving May 11th on Vapor Records).
The album makes a bold statement on the first song, “Let Go”. This is Everest’s anthem. The intro sends chills down my spine. The guitar rotates from speaker to speaker while the rhythm pounds along. Pollard’s voice conveys such emotion leading up to the chorus, “I know we’re gonna make it tonight, tomorrow will be alright. Let Go!” With one listen the song is overwhelming and it just get more infectious with each listen.
The mid tempo rocker “I’ve Had This Feeling Before” and the sweet melodic “Keeping the Score” follow; at this point you know you are in for a unique listen.
The rock roots of “East Illinois” and “Fallen Feathers” lead to the rocking swagger of “House of 9’s”. The beautiful acoustic ballads “Tall buildings” and “The Rush” take you to the epic closer of “Catalyst”.
“On Approach” is a true “album,” in that all the songs work together as a collective unit. Veteran producer/mixer Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Beck, Foo Fighters), who mixed “On Approach”, said that “On Approach has all the good things that make a great record. It has familiarity yet doesn’t copy anything. It’s expansive, and it doesn’t sit in one place.” He is right the album offers a variety of quality songs that make up a quality album.
Everest have set the bar high with “On Approach”. This album is as close to perfect as it can get. The only thing it lacks is that the power of the first song is never matched, rather it is carried throughout the album. Saying that it seems obvious that Everest will be a band that’s going to be around for a long time but if they keep making songs like “Let Go” and albums like “On Approach”, Everest will be a household name.

"Let Go" is featured on WXAV's coveted A-List! Check out the video HERE on Spinner's website.

On Approach will be available everywhere May 11th

Dr. Dog have earned their Degree

Comments (0) | Thursday, April 22, 2010

I remember first hearing Dr. Dog’s 2008 album “Fate” and thinking, this band is amazing. I thought, I must see them live! Then I questioned to whether they could even pull these songs off live. Dr. Dog have a very vintage sound, they use three part harmonies and draw influences from The Band, The Beach Boys, and The Beatles. Despite that vintage vibe, Dr. Dog sound modern and fresh.
Dr. Dog toured heavily off “Fate” and I missed them each time they came to Chicago and was deeply disappointed. With the announcement of a new record “Shame, Shame”, Dr. Dog would be back at the Metro and I couldn’t miss them this time.
Marty Lennartz DJ from 93.1 WXRT came onstage before the show and said he felt blessed to be able to host such a great band, and felt honored to see them progress from smaller venues around town to the 25-year Chicago staple, The Metro. He called their latest album “Shame, Shame” their most polished effort.
“Shame, Shame” is a very polished record especially production wise it is very smooth and it is a very good, consistent album. It definitely grows on you but doesn’t have the immediate impact of “Fate”.
Dr. Dog knows how great “Fate” is as well. Having missed them on every Chicago date in support of that record I was hoping to hear some songs from “Fate” mixed with most of “Shame, Shame” and their other four albums. Well I was in store for a treat. Dr. Dog played all but two song songs from “Fate” as well as “Shame, Shame” in its entirety.
They opened with the single from “Shame, Shame”, “Stranger”. Instantly I felt the impact of the band and I was hooked.
The crowd was loving it and singing along, they erupted when “Old Days” and “The Breeze” from “Fate” were played. The band sounded so much like the album.
During “From” and “The Beach” I closed my eyes just to listen and this show really could not have sounded better it was perfect. Both songs were among highlights.
Other highlights included “The Ark”, “Later”, and “Hang On”, as the crowd sang and danced along.
Bassist and vocalist Toby Leaman was high energy the whole night and his vocals were raw and primal. Guitarist and vocalist Scott McMicken offered a nice contrast and his vocals are softer and more innocent. They would swap vocal duties every couple of songs offering a nice dynamic but they didn’t get much of a break as many Dr. Dog songs require three part harmony. One of the only breaks in the show came when Leaman addressed the crowd saying that the band went to the Cubs game earlier that day. Their other break came before the encore; but otherwise the band played straight through a 90 plus minute set.
During the encore Guitarist Frank McElroy walked out with a giant hand giving a “thumbs up”. I think everyone can agree that’s what the show earned. It’s everything you want from a concert. Dr. Dog put on a stellar show that is fun, entertaining, energetic, moving and most of all sounds really really good.

Comments (0) | Monday, April 12, 2010

It's that time of year again kiddies! This Saturday, April 17th will mark the 3rd annual

For anyone who isn't familiar with this magnificent holiday, Record Store Day is one day in the year where all the independent record stores across the country can join together in spirit to celebrate music in all its glory and to honor your local record shops! (It does not celebrate giant, corporate, conglomerate stores, strictly indie!) It was first conceived by Chris Brown (not that Chris Brown, Chris Brown from Bull Moose Music ) and put into motion by the team of Eric Levin, Michael Kurtz, Carrie Colliton, Amy Dorfman, Don Von Cleave, and Brian Poehner back in 2007.

Record Store Day is usually celebrated with having in-store performances or appearances from artists, special releases of material on CD or vinyl, various freebies and a whole lot of madness!

Here's the man himself, Chris Brown, to give ya some sneak peaks of what's to be released..

If you're with us in the Chicago area, here are some of the participating stores...

We here at the Thursday Casserole hold this day very close to our hearts and will DEFINITELY be out making our rounds to the different shops! Even if you don't buy anything, the atmosphere of this day, the feeling of unity among music lovers, is absolutely wonderful! So we hope to see you out there!

Fresh Pick of the Week: Free Energy

Comments (0) |

The five-piece, Philly-based pop-rock sensation known as Free Energy hit the scene in 2009 with their self-titled EP. This year, they're giving us their first full-length album, Stuck on Nothing, produced by LCD Soundsystem mastermind, James Murphy. Free Energy consists of Scott Wells, Paul Sprangers, Evan Wells, Geoff Bucknam, and Nick Shuminsky.

What set the mood for us in listening to this record was that, with the press package for the album, they included a cassette tape! The feel of the entire record fits right in with the nostalgia surrounding the cassette. It has a very classic, late 70's/early 80's pop sound. It's very sunny and happy; perfectly suiting the transition into this nice weather!

This is the third track on the album, "Bang Pop." It's a tune you can throw the top down on the car (or just roll down all the windows) and hit the highway without any particular destination!

Stuck on Nothing drops May 4th.

See Free Energy LIVE at the Beauty Bar on April 23rd! Who knows, perhaps there may be a run-in with the Casserole as well? ;)

Twitter and check out their Myspace!!

Fresh Pick of the Week: The Dead Weather

Comments (0) | Wednesday, April 7, 2010

Since the release of Horehound last year, the Dead Weather has been teasing fans with talk of another album. Horehound was released in July and a few months later, singer Alison Mosshart revealed that the next release was already half finished! Now is has been announced that the Dead Weather's Sea of Cowards is expected to hit stores worldwide May 10/11th! (Right at the peak of festival season ;] )

Originally, Jack White had said that the first single was going to be "Blue Blood Blues," a heavier bluesy track that would feature White on lead vocals. But last month, we were given this gem, "Die By The Drop." It's wicked, it's heavy, and it's AMAZING! Here it is!

This official video for the song was directed by the super talented Floria Sigismondi (who has also worked with Muse, Interpol, The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, Sigur Ros and David Bowie!).

The single for "Die By The Drop" is available for purchase digitally and as a vinyl 7in
HERE through the Dead Weather's website and features the B-Side of "Old Mary."

And mark your calendars for the release of Sea of Cowards coming MAY 10th!!
