Approaching Perfection

Everest’s Myspace describes them as: “Often descriptions of bands fall into the equation of “this well known group plus this other established act plus a few adjectives.” But some bands defy this shorthand, offering something so pure & true that its roots aren't apparent. Everest is this sort, taking us down to foundational rock truths with an easy glide and expansive vision. While one can draw some clues from the folks they’ve toured with – Neil Young, Wilco, My Morning Jacket – ultimately Everest is simply a great rock ‘n’ roll band in the classic, open-minded mold.”
Everest formed in Los Angeles in 2007, comprised of Russell Pollard (vocals, guitar, drums, lyricist), Jason Soda (guitar, keys, vocals), Joel Graves (guitar, keys, vocals), Elijah Thomson (bass, vocals) and Davey Latter (drums, percussion). In 2008 they released their debut, “Ghost Notes”, which was only recorded over two weeks. The album gained them some critical acclaim.
Now they are releasing their follow up and highly anticipated, “On Approach” (arriving May 11th on Vapor Records).
The album makes a bold statement on the first song, “Let Go”. This is Everest’s anthem. The intro sends chills down my spine. The guitar rotates from speaker to speaker while the rhythm pounds along. Pollard’s voice conveys such emotion leading up to the chorus, “I know we’re gonna make it tonight, tomorrow will be alright. Let Go!” With one listen the song is overwhelming and it just get more infectious with each listen.
The mid tempo rocker “I’ve Had This Feeling Before” and the sweet melodic “Keeping the Score” follow; at this point you know you are in for a unique listen.
The rock roots of “East Illinois” and “Fallen Feathers” lead to the rocking swagger of “House of 9’s”. The beautiful acoustic ballads “Tall buildings” and “The Rush” take you to the epic closer of “Catalyst”.
“On Approach” is a true “album,” in that all the songs work together as a collective unit. Veteran producer/mixer Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Beck, Foo Fighters), who mixed “On Approach”, said that “On Approach has all the good things that make a great record. It has familiarity yet doesn’t copy anything. It’s expansive, and it doesn’t sit in one place.” He is right the album offers a variety of quality songs that make up a quality album.
Everest have set the bar high with “On Approach”. This album is as close to perfect as it can get. The only thing it lacks is that the power of the first song is never matched, rather it is carried throughout the album. Saying that it seems obvious that Everest will be a band that’s going to be around for a long time but if they keep making songs like “Let Go” and albums like “On Approach”, Everest will be a household name.

It's that time of year again kiddies! This Saturday, April 17th will mark the 3rd annual

The five-piece, Philly-based pop-rock sensation known as Free Energy hit the scene in 2009 with their self-titled EP. This year, they're giving us their first full-length album, Stuck on Nothing, produced by LCD Soundsystem mastermind, James Murphy. Free Energy consists of Scott Wells, Paul Sprangers, Evan Wells, Geoff Bucknam, and Nick Shuminsky.

What set the mood for us in listening to this record was that, with the press package for the album, they included a cassette tape! The feel of the entire record fits right in with the nostalgia surrounding the cassette. It has a very classic, late 70's/early 80's pop sound. It's very sunny and happy; perfectly suiting the transition into this nice weather!

This is the third track on the album, "Bang Pop." It's a tune you can throw the top down on the car (or just roll down all the windows) and hit the highway without any particular destination!
