Concert Review: Delta Spirit

Delta Spirit
The Metro, Chicago
June 19th, 2010
They’ll Be Your New Favorite Band
I had high expectations going into my first Delta Spirit show at the Metro. I’ve heard nothing but good things about Delta Spirit, from the critical acclaim surrounding their debut album Ode to Sunshine to just the recommendation of their high energy live show. My friends and critics, and even musicians I’ve interviewed agree; Delta Spirit are something special.
Let me tell you now, this is another recommendation, maybe even a plea. You have to experience Delta Spirit!
Delta Spirit bring so much. You get a rock and roll show: sky-high energy, catchy songs, beautiful songs, anthems, and most of all the show was fun. It was the most fun I’ve had at a concert in a long time. It was amazing watching the band instill crowd interaction and how much the crowd actually responded.
They opened with “People Turn Around” , which the crowd instantly recognized. From there they tore right into “Bushwick Blues” off their new album, History from Below, and it sounded fantastic! I was sold.
The entire set was stellar. From “White Table” to “Children” to a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” straight into “Trashcan” and a beautiful live version of “Vivian”.
In what I thought was the last song of the night, the band played an amazing version of “People C’mon” and the crowd sang along louder than I have ever heard a crowd sing at the Metro.
During the final song of the night they broke into a rendition of “Shout” by the Isley Brothers. With each "little bit softer now" from singer Matt Vasquez, the crowd lowered to the floor until it was time to "get a little bit louder now". Then the audience erupted back into a frenzy. I was having a blast and it seemed that everyone else was too.
It was a show that I thought about later that night, that I thought about the next day, and one that I told my friends all about how they missed out. But most of all, this show made me appreciate the little things of life, simple things like going to a show and having a good time, regardless if people are rudely talking through the set. It made me appreciate music in general knowing that in these tough economic times anyone can go see a $14 show where a band gives absolutely all they have and the good vibes can resonate beyond the concert.
-Jeff
FOR THE RECORD!!
This show was probably THE best show I have ever seen! AND I turned Jeff onto Delta Spirit in the first place! :)

We caught up with Dean after his EXPLOSIVE set with The Dead Weather at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival! He told us more about his new solo project: Hello = Fire, the future of The Dead Weather, and a whole lot more!
The interview will air around 4:00PM CST on WXAV 88.3FM Chicago but you can also LISTEN ONLINE at WXAV.com or right here on the blog where the video will be posted after the broadcast!
Dean Fertita has always had a passion for music. He started playing piano at 6 and guitar at 15. He went to highschool and became friends with fellow musician Brendan Benson .
Fertita formed the group the Waxwings in 1997. He was the lead singer and guitar player until the bands demise in 2005. He then moved onto touring with Brendan Benson, which led to him touring with the Raconteurs in 2006.
In 2007, Dean joined Queens of the Stone Age playing guitar and keyboards.
In 2009, Dean was staying at Jack White’s house when Jack Lawrence and Alison Mosshart stopped by. They recorded a 7" and just like that, the Dead Weather was formed.
Now Dean is looking to release his solo project, Hello=Fire, to the U.S. The self-titled album is set for a fall release in 2010. The album was recorded at various studios while Fertita was on tour with Queens of the Stone Age. The album features guest appearances by band members from Queens of the Stone Age, Brendan Benson (who also produced the album) as well as The Afghan Whigs bassist, Michael Horrigan.
Get your tickets to see Dean and The Dead Weather play the Congress Theater July 30th! And stay tuned for more information on the debut release of Hello = Fire, coming this Fall
