R.I.P. Benjamin Curtis (Secret Machines, School of Seven Bells)

Comments (0) | Monday, December 30, 2013

The music industry has lost another true visionary in Benjamin Curtis who lost his battle with cancer yesterday. He was 35 years old. Benjamin Curtis was the guitar player and background vocalist for one of our favorite bands, Secret Machines. He went on to be the producer and guitarists for School of Seven Bells. Prior to Secret Machines he was in other bands, always making music.

We've always had the utmost respect for him and his music. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his brother Brandon and all of his friends and loved ones.  He will be greatly missed but we'll continue to appreciate the music he has given us.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club- Specter At The Feast (REVIEW)

Comments (0) | Wednesday, March 13, 2013

Robert Levon Been, Peter Hayes, and Leah Shaprio carry on after the loss of Michael Been, who was not only their producer and mentor but Robert’s father and a father figure for the whole band. On their seventh album, Specter At The Feast, you can hear BRMC as they go through the motions of dealing with such a loss.

In tribute, they cover “Let the Day Begin”; a song from Michael Been’s former band, The Call. The addition of Peter Hayes’ signature guitar sound gives the song a fresh modern update.

“Fire Walker” introduces an irresistible, slow burning groove that is an immediate highlight.  “Funny Games” features Been on the verses while Hayes comes in to sing a dramatic chorus, adding the perfect dynamic. Other standouts include the straight forward rock and roll of 'Hate the Taste' and "Lose Yourself", which is reminiscent of Coldplay's "Fix You" and equally as epic.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club don’t really look to break any new ground, most of these songs could be flawlessly added to any of their previous records. But rather they continue their tradition of quality songwriting.

Sound City (Review)

Comments (0) | Friday, February 1, 2013

In Sound City director Dave Grohl tells two stories. One of Sound City, the legendary recording studio, and how Sound City effected his life.

Grohl starts the documentary saying, "We were just kids with dreams that we threw into the back of a van".  A statement that nearly all musicians can relate to.  Of course for Grohl a story of much success.

The story really kicks off once Sound City buys the Neve console and the first artist they record with it is Buckingham and Nicks. Which leads to how Buckingham and Nicks ended up joining Fleetmood Mac and how Rumors brought much success to the studio.

From there Sound City was booking tons of artists along the lines of Neil Young, Tom Petty and the Greatful Dead. From there the documentary touched on things like drum sounds, 80's hair metal, and how a new digital era in recording was killing the studio.

That is until Nirvana's Nevermind was recorded there. This brought along the second wave of success for Sound City.

But even with that success, the story of Sound City didn't have a happy ending and the studio closed down and left employees jobless.

From that point, Grohl becomes the main focus when he buys the Neve console from Sound City. He wants to show off the quality of the Neve console in his studio with many of the artists that recorded on the board previously. He invites Stevie Nicks, Rick Springfield, John Fogarty, and randomly Sir Paul McCartney shows up as well.

The only complaint here is that they probably could've saved some of these sessions for the Director's Cut version. But that's being picky. (Note: We loved seeing BRMC jam with Grohl on the big screen during the ending credits)

This documentary is a true music fan's dream. Covering everything from recording (undoubtedly the best drum sound ever!), to the analog vs. digital debate, and input from some of the greatest artists and studio techs of all time.

Sound City Rocks!
