RIP: CAPTAIN BEEFHEART

Comments (0) | Monday, December 27, 2010

Music lost a true pioneer today. Don Van Vilet, aka Captain Beefheart died of complications from multiple sclerosis at a hospital in Northern California this morning, he was 69.

He was avant-garde and often very much ahead of his time, covering genres including blues, jazz and psychedelia essentially creating "art rock." He was probably most famous 1969's for Trout Mask Replica, (although hard core fans may disagree). Captain Beefheart influenced many artists including Tom Waits, The Pixies, Nirvana, John Frusciante, The White Stripes, The Black Keys, The Kills and Beck.

Van Vilet was also a critically acclaimed visual artist in his later years.

Here's one of my favorites: China Pig

Happy Holidays from She & Him and Conan

Comments (0) | Friday, December 10, 2010

Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward of She & Him played Conan last night. Off air seemed to be where the party was happening, where they played "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" from Conan's dressing room.
Zooey's has a knack for Christmas songs as she sings "Baby It's Cold Outside" and "Santa Claus is coming to Town" in the movie, Elf.
During the show She & Him performed "I Put a Spell On You", the Scream Jay Hawkins cover from their first album, with anyone backing them. Zooey's voice front and center and some wonderful M. Ward guitar work.

R.I.P. Michael Been

Very sad news today. Michael Been has passed away at 60.

Michael was the singer and guitarist of 80's band, The Call. He was also the sound engineer and producer for his son's band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Truly sad, our deepest sympathies go out to Robert and Peter of BRMC and the whole BRMC crew, as well as the Call. Even briefly meeting him, he was a wonderful person.

LOLLAPALooZA!!

This Thursday, we'll be giving you OUR picks to see for this year's Lollapalooza festival in Grant Park!!

Here's your Lolla playlist! This is what we'll be rocking out to!

The Walkmen- The Rat
Jukebox the Ghost- Hold It In
The Big Pink- Velvet
DEVO- What We Do
New Pornographers- Your Hands (Together)
Black Keys- Sinister Kid
Hot Chip- Take It In
the Strokes- Take It or Leave it

Blitzen Trapper- Sleepytime in the Western World
Company of Theives- Oscar Wilde
Mumford & Sons- The Cave
Thenewno2- Yomp
The National- Apartment Story
Arcade Fire- Wake Up
Soundgarden- Spoonman

To help out our fellow festival go-ers, here's a little breakdown of what to bring on your trip to Grant Park. So grab a backpack and grab...

Water!!! - You are allowed to bring with you factory-sealed bottles of water or empty ones. We'd recommend you bring at least 3 of either. There are several water stations around the park where you can refill. With the heat plus the addition of being surrounded by tens of thousands of other fans around you, it's SUPER important that you stay hydrated and pace yourself!

Sunscreen and Bug-repellant: The last thing you want to be worried about when you're waiting for one of your favorite bands to go on is a blistering red face and being under seige by a million mosquitos! Not the best souveniers!!

Toilet Paper or Napkins: While the festival staff do a good job of keeping up with the bathrooms on site, never hurts to be prepared!!

Blanket: It's actually multi-purpose. A blanket, mat, or beach towel comes in handy to sit on while enjoying a break in the shade or lunch. Also, you can throw it down at a stage when you're waiting for a band to come on as a means to stake your territory!

Cash: Seems obvious, but you'll want to bring enough to enjoy the amazing array of food stands that are available as well as get yourself some sweet merch!

Camera: To capture all of your favorite concert memories and share with all those friends who missed out!

So be safe, be nice, and have fun!! We'll see you there!! Then after the fest, email us with your stories and pictures at ThursdayCasserole@gmail.com!!

Concert Review: Delta Spirit

Delta Spirit
The Metro, Chicago
June 19th, 2010

They’ll Be Your New Favorite Band

I had high expectations going into my first Delta Spirit show at the Metro. I’ve heard nothing but good things about Delta Spirit, from the critical acclaim surrounding their debut album Ode to Sunshine to just the recommendation of their high energy live show. My friends and critics, and even musicians I’ve interviewed agree; Delta Spirit are something special.

Let me tell you now, this is another recommendation, maybe even a plea. You have to experience Delta Spirit!

Delta Spirit bring so much. You get a rock and roll show: sky-high energy, catchy songs, beautiful songs, anthems, and most of all the show was fun. It was the most fun I’ve had at a concert in a long time. It was amazing watching the band instill crowd interaction and how much the crowd actually responded.

They opened with “People Turn Around” , which the crowd instantly recognized. From there they tore right into “Bushwick Blues” off their new album, History from Below, and it sounded fantastic! I was sold.

The entire set was stellar. From “White Table” to “Children” to a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” straight into “Trashcan” and a beautiful live version of “Vivian”.

In what I thought was the last song of the night, the band played an amazing version of “People C’mon” and the crowd sang along louder than I have ever heard a crowd sing at the Metro.

During the final song of the night they broke into a rendition of “Shout” by the Isley Brothers. With each "little bit softer now" from singer Matt Vasquez, the crowd lowered to the floor until it was time to "get a little bit louder now". Then the audience erupted back into a frenzy. I was having a blast and it seemed that everyone else was too.

It was a show that I thought about later that night, that I thought about the next day, and one that I told my friends all about how they missed out. But most of all, this show made me appreciate the little things of life, simple things like going to a show and having a good time, regardless if people are rudely talking through the set. It made me appreciate music in general knowing that in these tough economic times anyone can go see a $14 show where a band gives absolutely all they have and the good vibes can resonate beyond the concert.

-Jeff

FOR THE RECORD!!
This show was probably THE best show I have ever seen! AND I turned Jeff onto Delta Spirit in the first place! :)
