Top 5 Albums of 2011

Comments (0) | Thursday, December 29, 2011

1. Dawes - Nothing Is Wrong
Out of everything  album we listened to in 2011 nothing struck quite like Nothing Is Wrong. The instant you put it on, it's familiar but fresh.  The first thing you notice while listening to the record is the quality. The quality of songwriting, Taylor Goldsmith writes beautiful songs and amazing lyrics and he sings those words as if no other words could substitute in their place. The quality of the band as a whole. This band is a cohesive unit, it's very reminiscent of The Band, and the album was basically recorded live. Who doesn't like harmonies? Dawes nail them every time. Taylor, Griffin Goldsmith, and Alex Casnoff create a three part harmony like no one else in rock music. Let's not forget the quality of production. Jonathan Wilson helps give the album a timeless sound, just like he did with their first album. The quality of the album is undeniable.
Bottom line here is that the album title is true, nothing is wrong. Every song on the album is good, 11 memorable songs that complete a perfect record.
Go one step further and see them live too. Highly recommended!

2. Wilco - The Whole Love
A band that never fails to amaze. "The Art of Almost" opens The Whole Love and it blows you away. Wilco make a statement on this album. And it's that they are still making grade A albums. The Whole Love ranks among their best. It plays almost like a Wilco greatest hits album. The Whole Love is like a melting pot of their career work and that's the best part of it. It's got everything you want. The track list is well balance and the band is better than ever. It's got something new with each listen as it is sonically layered and like most Wilco albums it craves your attention.
When your a veteran band like Wilco people will always compare back to your old work, talk about the period where they were at their peak. As far as we are concerned The Whole Love will always be in the conversation.

3. Middle Brother - Middle Brother
I really love this album. Middle Brother takes three amazing artists, Matt Vasquez (Delta Spirit), John McCauley (Deer Tick), and Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes). The result is a perfect album that is purely American music. It is as perfect as the other two albums that precede it on this list. With three different singers it is a diverse record that has a fantastic flow.  Out of all albums this year I have recommended Middle Brother more than any other album. Its the easiest album to tell someone to go listen to. Even if they only like a few songs they are getting something out of it. As for me, I love the whole thing. -Jeff
*They almost named the band, the Traveling Bill Murrays.

4. Foo Fighters - Wasting Light
Foo Fighters are a dying breed of mainstream rock. For such a mainstream artist this was a very underrated album. Top to bottom its all adrenaline, high octane straightforward Rock 'N Roll. Butch Vig produced the album and brought out the best in them since The Colour and the Shape. It's nothing new from the Foo Fighters as they haven't evolved, they are not trying to be artsy. Just an album full of damn good songs. Honestly, what more can you ask for?

5. Foster the People - Torches
I am a total sucker for music that makes me dance. Catchy beats and clever lyrics, talk about a home run! Foster the People have made quite a name for themselves with this debut that is infectious from start to finish. Just their first single, "Pumped Up Kicks" alone has reaped in a cornucopia of award nominations, including Grammy's for Best Duo/Group Performance and Best Alternative Album! - Pam

Honorable Mention:
The Kills- Blood Pressures
Coming right off the heels of the Dead Weather's second tour, singer Alison Mosshart and guitarist Jamie Hince kick back with their fourth studio album. And they picked right up where they left off. This album is the perfect continuing evolution of the duo. It's spooky. It's smoky. It's sexy!

Comments | Thursday, December 8, 2011

In celebration of Wilco's Chicago Residency (and their awesomeness), Thursday Casserole will be playing tracks from each Wilco album.

But we'd like your help selecting our playlist. What's your favorite Wilco song? You can email us at thursdaycasserole@gmail.com or leave us a comment on our Facebook or twitter.
We will play one song from each album, so the winning song from each album will get played and the song with the overall votes will also win. Feel free to choose anything from A.M. to The Whole Love to any of the Mermaid Ave. stuff to More like the Moon. You name it we'll play it.

As you know Record Store Day is having some exclusives for Black Friday. And let me be the first to tell you they are damn good! Check em out yourself. So we will be playing our favorite selections from the Black Friday Record Store Day exclusives.

But that's not all! On that note, Chef Jeff and Chef Pam will be debating the future of physical music. And we'd love to hear from you as well. Give us your thoughts or opinions on the topic. Feel free to call us at WXAV 773-298-3386 or email us at Thursdaycasserole@gmail.com.

But there's more! Thanks to WXAV we also have an exclusive interview with a little band you might have heard of called Coldplay!

Fresh off the release of Mylo Xyloto, Rob Quicke caught up with Coldplay's Chris Martin. Hear it on November 16th.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club- "Shadow on the Run"

Comments (0) | Tuesday, September 6, 2011

I don't know what I think about music made for video game soundtracks but frankly at the end of the day it is music. And in this case brand new music from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and it is awesome. You can hear the track here
BRMC bassist Robert Been tells Rolling Stone, "The developers of the game contacted us to see if we were interested in the project. We've never worked with video game developers before and figured it would be a different kind of challenge."
The soundtrack, Batman: Arkham City, also features the likes of the Duke Spirit and the Raveonettes.

Album Review: THE KILLS

Comments | Tuesday, May 31, 2011

Welcome Ladies and Gentlemen to the first edition of PAM'S FORK!! This is where I get to rant about new albums that I love (or on rare occasion..hate!!)

I like to consider myself your escape from all those snobby, pretentious music journalists who resist at all costs being impressed by, well, ANYTHING! Here, it's an open playing field: no pedestals, no grudges, just an honest-to-goodness opinion that you can freely agree with or challenge.

For my first pick, I would like to introduce you to the latest from one of my favorite bands....

THE KILLS - BLOOD PRESSURES
I’ll admit, after 2008′s Midnight Boom and back to back releases from The Dead Weather, I didn’t know WHAT to expect from The Kills’ new album. But after listening to Blood Pressures, it’s clear that Jamie and Alison are back and picking up right where they left off!

Each song carries an underlying “up-to-no-good” sensibility through booming bass lines, bellowing chants and clever lyrics, yet you still get that gritty swagger that we’ve come to know and love about The Kills.
Right off the bat they get things started right with “Futures Start Slow” and the single, “Satellite.” Heavy. Smoky. Haunting.
Jamie surprised me with a brief Beatles-esque soliloquy in “Wild Charms” which is then immediately answered with “DNA.”
Another pleasant surprise is the retro-feeling, ”Baby Says” which sounds like modern day doo-wop. Then you have the closer, ”Pots and Pans” which the only way I can think to describe it is as Norman Bates. An eerie tribal drum takes you through each of the verses which begin very charming and light, then two lines later take a suspicious chord change that makes you really listen to the lyrics being sung.
The front runner for my favorite is “The Last Goodbye”, a sombre yet optimistic ballad showcasing a classical piano piece. The chords are both theatrical and nostalgic. Mosshart sings “How can I rely on my heart if I break it with my own two hands?,” showing the band’s softer side. It has this “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” quality to it. However, there’s definitely no shortage of rock and roll throughout the 11 tracks and I HIGHLY recommend this album to anyone!!
Overall, I give this album a 8.7 out of 10!!!
One thing’s for sure, I sure am glad I already have my ticket to see the Kills play The Vic here in Chicago next month!!
Check out THE KILLS WEBSITE for more information like tour dates and how to secure your copy of Blood Pressures!!

Tastiest Tracks: “Future Starts Slow”, ”Satellite”, “The Last Goodbye”, “Pots and Pans”. “Baby Says”, “Nail in My Coffin”

The White Stripes are Over

Comments (0) | Wednesday, February 2, 2011

One of my favorite bands, The White Stripes have officially called it quits. According to Third Man Records and The White Stripes Official website, they offered a statement.

In the statement they say they will no longer record or perform live. "The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feelin
g fine and in good health. It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is
beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way."

"The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful."

They go out with their last album, Icky Thump and the live compilation Under Great White Northern Lights and the beautiful documentary. They performed for the last time on The Late Show with Conan O' Brien.

The White Stripes' music is near and dear to my heart. They are the reason I started playing guitar. Through the White Stripes I discovered nearly every band I listen to today. But above all I just LOVE their music. I can listen to it regardless of mood, and at any time of the day. To me it's perfect music. "Rouge, Le Blanc"
Thank you Jack and Meg.

-Jeff

Tomorrow's show 2/3 will be dedicated to the White Stripes Music. Tune in.
